Amphibian Migration Safety Fence "Platten"Since 2004 amphibians on their spring migration are rescued from traffic injuries on Zürichstrasse/Platten. All captured animals are statistically registered and enjoy a safe & gentle shuttle service to a safe re-start point of their journey. That way, each season around 500 - 1000 amphibians are saved from becoming road-kill.

Nesting Aid for Stork & Co.Already for several years a pair of storks has chosen the "Schifflände Maur" as their home-base. The XXL-Swift-Birdhouse in Aesch, which has been without tenants for a few seasons, has been equipped with a bird-call sound-system in April 2018. Hopefully this will encourage progeny in our new, winged neighbours.
In March 2019 we celebrated the building of a second birdhouse for swifts and House Martins in Maur, Unterdorf. So far, only sparrows choose the nesting sites as dwelling place. Apparently, the swifts are capable to throw sparrows out, if necessary. Within the municipal boundaries of Zumikon and Maur numerous nesting boxes are provided for the respective. plumed inhabitants. |
Biodiversity in Residential AreasOld, organically designed gardens and communal, green spaces, often are the last retreat / resort for many species. We provide information on which measures can be taken to improve the habitat for our wild neighbors.
